Alex Marquez Withdraws from Qatar GP for Shoulder Surgery

A major blow has hit the Gresini Racing squad ahead of the final stretch of the season as Alex Marquez is forced to withdraw from the upcoming Lusail round to undergo surgery on his troublesome right shoulder.

The decision comes after a grueling weekend in Sepang where the Spanish rider managed a heroic podium finish. Despite his strong pace at one of his favorite venues, the #73 rider admitted that his physical limitations have reached a critical point, stemming from the heavy crash he suffered during the Catalan Grand Prix back in May.

“From the moment that I came back after the Catalunya accident, I suffered a lot with my right shoulder,” Marquez explained candidly to the press regarding the persistent pain he has endured on his Ducati machine.

“I decided tomorrow to take a surgery in Madrid. I will try to come back in Portimao in three weeks' time,” he added, outlining his recovery timeline with the objective of returning for the Portuguese Grand Prix.

The upcoming medical procedure has been described by the rider as two surgeries in one. Surgeons will remove a large plate from his shoulder while simultaneously draining fluid and attempting to reduce severe inflammation that has completely prevented him from performing any normal fitness training at home.

Having relied heavily on pain-relief injections to get through consecutive triple-header weekends, Marquez conceded that it became impossible to sustain the physical demands without proper intervention. With Fermin Aldeguer already sidelined due to a hand injury, Gresini faces further uncertainty regarding their rider lineup for Lusail, though stand-in Iker Lecuona remains the primary candidate to step in if the event proceeds.
