Pedro Acosta finally broke through. At the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, the KTM rider crossed the line first at the Red Bull Ring, claiming his maiden MotoGP victory on his 56th start and in his third season. It was a moment that had been building for years.
Since his debut in 2024 with the Tech3 satellite team, Acosta's talent was never in doubt. Five podiums in his rookie season hinted at what was to come, but the RC16 was not yet capable of challenging for wins consistently. The following year, with the factory KTM team, he added another five podiums, yet victory remained elusive.
This season, Acosta had already taken five more podiums from the opening 14 rounds, bringing his total to 15: eight second places and seven thirds. Those eight runner-up finishes made him the rider with the most MotoGP podiums without a win. That unwanted record finally ended in Austria, in front of KTM's home crowd and the sea of orange.
The win was not just Acosta's but also KTM's. The Austrian manufacturer had not won in MotoGP since the 2022 Thai Grand Prix, when Miguel Oliveira triumphed in wet conditions. Now, on home soil, KTM returned to the top step and proved their project still has life.
For Acosta, it was his 17th career Grand Prix victory, following six wins in Moto3 and 11 in Moto2, where he also secured the world title. He becomes the 17th Spanish rider to win in the premier class and the first non-Aprilia/Ducati rider to win this year, ending the Italian manufacturers' duopoly.
Next year, Acosta will join Ducati, where he hopes to find a more regular path to victory. But he will be teammates with Marc Marquez, the rider with the most MotoGP wins in history. It won't be easy, but Acosta has already shown he can compete at the highest level.
This victory in Austria was a moment of liberation for both Acosta and KTM. After years of waiting, they could finally celebrate together. And for Acosta, it marks the beginning of a new chapter in his career.
