Wild scenes erupted at the infamous superspeedway with six laps remaining as a massive multi-car accident broke out on the front stretch. The chaos began when the #22 Team Penske Ford Mustang driven by Joey Logano spun out after finding himself caught in a tight sandwich between Ross Chastain of Trackhouse Racing—who was on the verge of going a lap down—and Carson Hocevar of Spire Motorsports.

As Logano’s car rotated violently across the track on Lap 183, it lifted completely into the air off the nose of the #19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry driven by Chase Briscoe, eventually landing upside down on the asphalt. The aftermath of the terrifying incident left several drivers with nowhere to go, resulting in severe impacts against the barriers.

Among them, Riley Herbst suffered the heaviest blow of all. Driving the #35 23XI Racing entry, Herbst clouted the outside wall at high speed before enduring a vicious secondary impact into the inside SAFER barrier, sending shockwaves through the paddock.

Up until the Lap 183 multi-car pileup, Shane van Gisbergen had enjoyed a highly promising run. The versatile racer had spent the majority of the race running firmly inside the top ten, collecting a 13th-place finish in Stage 1 and an eighth-place finish in Stage 2, sitting comfortably in ninth position just moments before the red flag conditions loomed.

Realizing the extent of the damage after bringing his battered machine to a halt on the apron at the first turn, van Gisbergen immediately radioed his team to confirm his retirement. "I’m done," he transmitted over the team radio. "I had someone on my roof. We won’t be able to go back out. The car’s fucked. Thanks for the fast car, guys." NASCAR officials later confirmed that all drivers involved in the terrifying superspeedway crash successfully exited their vehicles.
