Joshua Duerksen secured a double victory at the Monza circuit by winning the Formula 2 feature race with an early pit stop strategy. The Paraguayan driver beat his Invicta teammate Rafael Camara, who had to settle for second. This win completed a perfect weekend after also taking the reverse-grid sprint race.
Duerksen became only the fifth driver in the modern F2 era to win both races in the same weekend. The achievement is even more special at a historic track like Monza. "It's surreal, like a dream. Monza has always had a special place in my heart," he said after the race.
The start was dramatic. Duerksen, starting from pole with Camara, managed to hold his position at the first corner. The pair swapped positions in the opening laps before Duerksen decided to pit early. He felt the supersoft tyres were dropping off and switched to the more durable soft compound.
Camara, pitting two laps later, lost over two seconds and had to work on tyre temperature while fending off Alex Dunne from Rodin Motorsport. However, with track position, Duerksen led the race.
Entering the final 10 laps, Camara began to close in. However, a safety car to recover Colton Herta's car from the Parabolica gravel changed things. AIX Racing, which was leading, pitted under the safety car, handing the lead back to the Invicta pair.
After the restart, Camara faced pressure from Dunne, who made a mistake and allowed Noel Leon to take third. Behind, championship leader Nikola Tsolov and Martinius Stenshorne had a near-miss.
On the last lap, Camara tried everything with DRS, but Duerksen stayed calm and finished 0.424s ahead. "I really tried to get close and attempt a move, but there was no gap on the last lap," said Camara. He still considered it a great result for the title fight and feels confident heading to Madrid.
