Criville Breaks Down Dani Pedrosa's Legendary Riding Technique

Alex Criville and Dani Pedrosa sat side by side in the DAZN 'Decoded' simulator, not to race, but to dissect one of MotoGP's most distinctive riding styles. For Criville, one moment at Jerez stands out: when Pedrosa had his bike upright while others were still leaning.

“Most riders were still leaned over, but you were already quite upright. That's not easy, is it? That technique requires a lot of work and precision,” Criville recalled of the final lap at Jerez. That ability to pick up the bike wasn't just aggression—it was a smart way to open the throttle earlier and maximize corner exit.

Criville highlighted Dani Pedrosa's 'pick-up' skill, the speed at which he lifted the bike after a corner. According to him, this technique allowed Pedrosa to exploit the precision of his Honda. “Not everyone can do that,” he added.

From Fear of Rain to Adaptation

A lesser-known aspect was Pedrosa's relationship with wet racing. Criville remembered that rain used to be Pedrosa's weak point, especially with rain tires that offered little feedback. “I remember water was your pending subject. You weren't fully confident, yet you were still incredibly fast,” he said.

Pedrosa acknowledged this, but he managed to adapt and become competitive in all conditions. The evolution of rain tires has changed the riding feel drastically since his era, when a crash could come without warning.

The conversation then shifted to Criville's rivalry with Mick Doohan. Instead of animosity, Criville saw Doohan as a benchmark. “I admired Mick because he was such a complete rider. My goal was to emulate and surpass him. There was no resentment, just hard work,” he said.

For Alex Criville, Pedrosa is the complete package: a rider with a unique technique who turned weaknesses into strengths. This analysis is not just nostalgia—it's a lesson in how small details decide results on track.
