Lewis Hamilton's furious radio rant at his Ferrari team during the Dutch Grand Prix left former F1 driver David Coulthard stunned. The Scot admitted he had never seen that side of the seven-time world champion.
In the second half of the race at Zandvoort, Hamilton grew increasingly frustrated with Ferrari's strategy. The boiling point came when he got stuck behind teammate Charles Leclerc, who was on a different strategy and older tyres. After being held up for two laps, Hamilton let his anger out when Leclerc finally pitted.
"Great way of wasting time guys, good job," Hamilton said sarcastically over the radio. He believed the lost time ultimately cost him a podium finish, as he ended up just behind George Russell, who was helped by a late virtual safety car.
Speaking on the Up to Speed podcast, Coulthard said: "I think he's got some valid points. I've never heard Lewis Hamilton so angry on the radio. I've never heard him raise his voice. He never curses. Never."
Hamilton has since apologised for his radio comments, admitting that in the heat of the moment "it wasn't the best version of me". In a social media post, he reflected on the weekend and took responsibility for his outburst.
"I've listened back to some of my radio and TV comments. In the heat of the moment frustration can come out, especially when you care as deeply as I do," Hamilton wrote. "But that wasn't the best version of me. I take responsibility for that, and I'll be better. That passion comes from believing in this team, the people in it, and what we're building together. The direction is clear. The belief is there. And the fight is absolutely still on."
Hamilton has now slipped to third in the championship, 59 points behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli and level on points with Russell. The pressure is mounting, and this moment could be a turning point for Hamilton to bounce back.
