Franco Colapinto was left in tears after a costly error at the Monza restart shattered his podium dream at the Italian Grand Prix. The Argentine had been starring for Alpine all weekend.
Pierre Gasly had taken a shock pole position, while Colapinto also featured inside the top ten. By the time the red flags flew for Charles Leclerc's heavy crash, Colapinto had already deployed all his electrical energy and sat fourth.
When racing resumed, he climbed to third after passing Max Verstappen. But as he tried to hold onto the position, he lost the rear of his Alpine at the first Lesmo and slid into the gravel. He recovered to the track but plummeted to 16th.
"It could have been a great race and I made a major mistake, so I wasted a very important opportunity for the team and for myself," he told ESPN Argentina. "I'm a bit sad, but I need to learn from this and keep pushing."
By the chequered flag, Colapinto had fought back to ninth, collecting two vital points. That put him just two places behind his team-mate, who had enjoyed a drama-free afternoon.
Speaking to the written media, Colapinto remained frustrated. "I'm just frustrated. I did some good stuff, and I just lost the car completely in Turn 5, 6. I was doing some good things, fighting with the top teams, and you get very motivated very quickly. Something like that throws it all away," he said.
"I don't really understand yet what happened. I think the car was very aggressive, and I went very flat over the curb, and that didn't help," he added. Reflecting on his pass on Verstappen, he admitted it felt cool to fight the big guns, which made the missed chance even more painful.
