The second free practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez delivered intense drama as Formula 1 regulars returned to the track following an opening session that featured ten rookies gaining valuable mileage. The unique altitude and track conditions of Mexico City immediately tested the grid as the pit lane exit went green.
Pierre Gasly was the first driver to head out on track, leading the field away for their crucial installation laps. However, the action escalated quickly when Ollie Bearman momentarily parked his car at Turn 3 before swiftly getting going again, while his Haas teammate reported an untimely power steering failure.
The low-grip asphalt caught several drivers out, requiring razor-sharp reflexes. Charles Leclerc caught a massive slide through Turn 10 followed by an even bigger oversteer moment at Turn 11, expertly keeping his Ferrari on the razor's edge to stay at the top of the timing sheets.
Tensions boiled over mid-session with a dramatic wheel-to-wheel clash between Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson that resulted in minor contact. The track later returned to standard conditions after Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari ground to a halt and had to be pushed safely behind the barriers.
As the clock wound down into the final minutes of FP2, Leclerc safely retained the number one spot. The top ten order featured Lando Norris, George Russell, Kimi Antonelli, Verstappen, Isack Hadjar, Arvid Lindblad, Gasly, Lawson, and Oscar Piastri, who provided a brilliant throttle control save exiting the final corner.
