Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Charles Leclerc set the fastest time in the opening free practice session of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park. The Ferrari driver posted a lap of 1:20.267, finishing almost half a second ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
Ferrari showed strong early pace with both cars occupying the top positions during FP1. Behind them, Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racing secured third place, followed by team-mate Isack Hadjar in fourth. Rookie Arvid Lindblad delivered an impressive performance on his Formula 1 debut weekend, setting the fifth-fastest time for Racing Bulls.
In contrast, Mercedes appeared quieter than expected during the session. George Russell was unable to challenge the leading pace, while Ferrari and Red Bull controlled the front of the field throughout much of the hour.

The opening minutes of FP1 were disrupted after Aston Martin confirmed that Fernando Alonso would not participate due to a suspected power unit issue with his AMR26. At the same time, Lindblad was briefly stranded at the pit exit on his debut, while both drivers from McLaren reported early power unit concerns.
Those incidents triggered an early virtual safety car before the session resumed at full pace. During the first run of representative lap times, Verstappen initially led the session with a time in the low 1:22 range before Leclerc responded with a faster lap and began trading quickest times with the Red Bull drivers.
By the halfway stage of the session, there was a six-second gap between the fastest driver and the slowest. Sergio Perez of Cadillac initially sat at the bottom of the order before improving his lap time, although he later lost his right-hand wing mirror during the run.
Aston Martin’s difficult session continued when Lance Stroll managed only three laps with a best time still in the 1:50 range. The team later ended his session early after detecting another suspected power unit issue that required further investigation.
With around 20 minutes remaining, Verstappen became the first driver to break into the 1:20 range, while Hadjar remained within two tenths of his team-mate. However, Ferrari regained the advantage in the closing stages when Hamilton briefly moved ahead of Verstappen.
In the final moments of the session, Leclerc delivered a decisive lap of 1:20.267, finishing 0.469 seconds faster than Hamilton to end FP1 as the fastest driver of the opening session of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
