Charles Leclerc has backtracked on his criticism of Kimi Antonelli following their intense battle during the Miami Grand Prix sprint, admitting his reaction was influenced by in-car emotions. The Ferrari driver had initially questioned Antonelli’s wheel-to-wheel driving.
The incident occurred in the early stages of the race when Antonelli dropped positions from the front row due to a poor start. This led to a direct fight with Leclerc, who felt the Mercedes driver’s defensive moves were overly aggressive, particularly under braking.
"Kimi is very bad wheel-to-wheel. He moved under braking, and we were close to crashing," Leclerc said over team radio during the race.
After the race, however, Leclerc softened his stance, acknowledging that his comments were too harsh. He explained that the intensity and adrenaline of racing had influenced his perception of the situation.
"I was probably too harsh with the adrenaline inside the car. I was quite angry at the time, but the comments were likely excessive."
From a technical perspective, the duel highlighted the fine margins between aggression and control in sprint conditions, where track position is critical and braking zones become key battlegrounds for overtaking and defence.
Leclerc also noted the broader dynamic, with Antonelli being the only Italian driver on the grid competing directly against Ferrari. While this adds an emotional layer to their rivalry, he emphasised that he still holds respect for the Mercedes driver.
With Antonelli also receiving a post-race penalty that affected both the result and standings, the incident formed part of a challenging weekend for both drivers. Focus now shifts to qualifying and the main race, where consistency and composure will be crucial in shaping the outcome in Miami and beyond.
