Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Carlos Sainz has disclosed details of a 20-minute conversation with fellow Spaniard Fernando Alonso, as both drivers reflected on the “complicated” situations facing their respective teams ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Aston Martin appears set to begin the campaign on the back foot following a difficult pre-season. The new partnership between Aston Martin and Honda has yet to deliver the expected results, with reliability issues restricting the AMR26 to fewer than 400 laps across nine days of testing in Barcelona and Bahrain.
Sainz can relate to that scenario. Williams missed the private Barcelona shakedown entirely, and the FW48 is expected to start the season overweight despite encouraging signs during running in Sakhir. The Spaniard described the circumstances as “not ideal” and acknowledged the complexity of the situation.

“I ran into Fernando one day in the paddock and we talked for about 20 minutes, catching up,” Sainz explained.
“He’s in a similar situation to me — not ideal, complicated — but eager to see what his team can bring and how they are able to react.”
For Sainz, the decisive factor is not the initial setback but the team’s capacity to respond. Under the leadership of James Vowles, Williams faces the challenge of accelerating development to remain competitive under the new regulations.
“In the end, we both depend on seeing the reaction capacity within our teams to the complicated situations we find ourselves in,” he added.
The four-time grand prix winner also expressed his support for Alonso and his hope that Aston Martin and Honda can recover from their pre-season difficulties.
“I wish him all the best, and I hope Aston Martin and Honda improve on what they showed in Bahrain,” Sainz said.
With the 2026 regulatory overhaul presenting fresh technical demands, development pace and adaptability will be critical for teams starting the season behind their rivals. For both Sainz and Alonso, the coming races will quickly reveal whether their teams can turn early adversity into competitive progress.
