Former race winner Cal Crutchlow has strongly endorsed Liberty Media and their ongoing efforts to expand the global profile of the motorcycle racing world championship. Despite mounting backlash and complaints from riders regarding new regulations and promotional obligations, Crutchlow insists the new owners are doing an exceptional job in growing the sport.
The American entertainment giant acquired MotoGP for i4.2 billion back in 2024. Ever since taking over the commercial rights, they have aggressively pushed the championship into fresh directions to maximize audience engagement, which includes increasing promotional duties and overhauling the weekend format set to launch in 2027.
However, these changes have sparked friction behind the scenes. In recent weeks, riders have actively pushed back against the incoming 2027 weekend format adjustments—which will integrate sprint qualifying sessions—as well as a strict series of penalties introduced for missing mandatory promotional events during race weekends.
Speaking in an interview with Motosans.ES, Crutchlow acknowledged the immense strain and headaches currently placed on the riders. Even so, he firmly reminded everyone that MotoGP ultimately functions as a business, emphasizing that competitors are fully aware of what their contracts entail when they put pen to paper.
Additionally, the 40-year-old voiced his thoughts on the current grid's personality vacuum, pointing out that modern riders often act too robotically and friendly toward one another. He singled out Pedro Acosta as the exact type of raw character and extraordinary talent that the championship desperately needs to captivate fans worldwide.
