Cadillac F1 2027 Line-up Mystery Deepens as Team Principal Dodges Questions

Speculation continues to surround the future of Valtteri Bottas at Cadillac as the American-owned outfit looks to bring on a homegrown driver for the upcoming seasons. The spotlight naturally gravitated towards Formula 1's American squads during the United States Grand Prix weekend, triggering awkward questions regarding their driver line-up plans for 2027 and beyond.

Both Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas are tied to multi-year contracts structured as a one-plus-one arrangement, where the second year remains optional based on specific performance conditions. The performance disparity between the two garage mates has fueled relentless paddock gossip concerning Valtteri Bottas and his precarious position within the team.

Recently appointed team principal Marcin Budkowski has been forced into firefighting mode, a task previously shouldered by his predecessor Graeme Lowdon. However, a rather peculiar exchange during the FIA team representatives' press conference in Austin strongly hinted that Cadillac's long-term roster plans are far from locked in.

The talking point arose when a broadcaster posed a soft question about Sergio Perez reaching his 300th grand prix start and whether the team held any interest in opening talks with Esteban Ocon for a reserve role. In his attempt to deliver a safe, diplomatic non-answer, Marcin Budkowski visibly floundered under the media scrutiny.

"Look, for a driver like Checo, who, as you said, has a huge amount of experience and a number of races, I can tell you he doesn't behave or drive like a driver who is anywhere close to retirement," Marcin Budkowski stated in defense of the veteran Mexican driver's current competitive hunger.

"He's pushing very hard behind the wheel. He's pushing us very hard also behind the scenes, in the debrief rooms and outside, and regularly texting me and other members of the team to push us to improve. He's hungry, he's motivated, and that's actually really good to see. He does it in his own style," the team boss added.

Elaborating further on his driver pairing dynamics, Marcin Budkowski noted the contrasting personalities pushing the technical department forward. "We have two drivers: one is more hot and one is probably more cold, if we could say, from there. And they both push the team in their own particular ways, but Checo is, yes, pushing us very hard," he concluded while successfully sidestepping the inquiry regarding Esteban Ocon.
