Frank van Meel, the head of BMW's M division, has a clear message for loyal fans who are still skeptical about the future of electric sports cars: the electric M3 is not born out of regulatory pressure, but a conscious choice to build a faster and better car. This statement also addresses fears that electrification will dilute the M character, which has long been associated with the thunderous sound of gasoline engines.
In an interview with Motor1, as reported by Carscoops, van Meel emphasized that BMW is not being forced to build an electric M3. “We are not making an electric M3 because we have to, but because we are convinced that this way we can build a fast and even better car,” he said. This stance shows that BMW M wants to lead the change, not just follow the industry's increasingly green trend.
This decision also opens a new chapter for the M lineup: the electric M3 will be sold alongside its conventional combustion-engine counterpart. This gives customers the choice between the iconic six- or eight-cylinder engine or a leap into the future with pure electric power. It's a smart strategy that doesn't force anyone to switch, but still provides a path forward.
Van Meel also stressed the importance of timing. “It will only work if we can realize it 100 percent the way we want,” he added. This suggests that BMW M will not compromise with half-measures—they want to ensure every detail, from handling to performance, is truly mature before launch.
The key to success lies in the Neue Klasse platform, which is designed specifically for electrification. With an architecture developed from scratch, BMW M can optimize the battery layout and electric motors without compromising with an existing chassis. Van Meel explained, “We could make a high-performance M only with four electric motors, torque vectoring, individual control, and our own software. For us, the car must deliver the typical M driving sensations.”
This philosophy shows that BMW M is not just chasing impressive 0-100 km/h times, but also wants to preserve the racing spirit that has been its hallmark. With precise torque vectoring control, the electric M3 could offer sharper and more enjoyable handling, possibly even surpassing its gasoline-powered predecessors.
Van Meel closed with a statement that encapsulates his long-term vision: “We do not decide what our customers should drive. Rather, we want to build cars that we ourselves love.” This approach may sound idealistic, but it is precisely what makes BMW M always anticipated.
