Marco Bezzecchi has admitted he is not sure he could have won the Aragon MotoGP sprint had he kept the lead at the start, insisting the Marquez brothers were simply quicker than him all weekend.
After stunning Marc Marquez in qualifying with a new lap record, Bezzecchi started from pole at MotorLand Aragon. His launch was perfect, but he was powerless to defend when Marc Marquez outbraked him into Turn 1. Alex Marquez also seized the opportunity, taking a tighter line through Turn 2 to sweep around the outside of Bezzecchi.
Despite running the faster but less durable soft rear tyre, Bezzecchi could not match the pace of the Marquez brothers even when his Michelins were at their peak. He eventually finished a distant third.
"The lead could have helped, but I don't know if it's the only reason because I finished third," said Bezzecchi, who was also hampered by an injured left knee. "What I know is my pace was like this today. So maybe if I was leading... but my pace anyway was like this. I think the others were a little bit faster."
Bezzecchi and his Aprilia teammate Jorge Martin were the only frontrunners to opt for the soft rear, while most of the field chose the medium. Despite the result, Bezzecchi defended the tyre choice: "It's easy to say now the medium was better, but honestly, that idea never really came to my mind because I felt good with the soft. I worked well all day with it."
The result still pleased Bezzecchi as he gained ground on Martin in the championship, and he enjoyed the battle at a track where Aprilia has never won. "It was tricky, but I enjoyed it. The balance of the day was very good," he said.
