Marco Bezzecchi started the Aragon MotoGP perfectly. From pole, he led the opening laps. But behind that advantage, the Aprilia rider quickly realized he didn't have the pace to hold off Marc Marquez.
Even so, Bezzecchi didn't give up easily. He tried to fight back when Marc Marquez took the lead at the chicane on lap six. A fierce duel ensued, with the pair inches apart in a head-to-head drag race at over 300km/h along the back straight. Unfortunately, Bezzecchi had to yield.
The pressure allowed Pedro Acosta to snatch second place from Bezzecchi. "Even when I was leading, I saw my pace wasn't the best. I tried to open a gap, but I knew Marc would come back. Honestly, I wanted to make his life a bit harder, also for Pedro, but I lost both places in a couple of seconds!" Bezzecchi said, as reported by Crash.net.
Bezzecchi agreed with Marquez that aerodynamic turbulence caused the pair to be drawn together on the straight. "When we got close on the straight, the air was doing something strange. I wanted to move away, but sometimes I was coming closer. Then I was too far left, so I had to brake earlier, and at that moment Pedro came from the right with good speed. Unfortunately, I lost the places. But it was a fun moment!" he explained.
Although unable to challenge Acosta again, Bezzecchi finished comfortably clear of Alex Marquez, who had been runner-up to Marc in the Sprint. "It was a wonderful weekend. Last year, I came here and started the race in last place. This year, I grabbed pole and made a double podium. So I'm very satisfied," Bezzecchi said.
The defeat drops Bezzecchi to third in the championship, behind Marquez. However, he gained seven points on teammate and title leader Jorge Martin at Aragon.
