Ben Barnicoat admitted that Max Verstappen's squad faced a challenging qualifying session after managing only 15th place on the grid for the GT World Challenge Europe round at the Portimao circuit in Portugal. The Mercedes GT3 entry was heavily hampered by persistent set-up issues, severely limiting their pace during the all-important time attack.
The qualifying hour did not go according to plan for Verstappen Racing in Portugal, as the car visibly bounced along the circuit straights, sending sparks flying that could be easily spotted by television viewers. Ultimately, the reigning Formula 1 star had to drag the machinery up to a modest 15th position in Q3.
Shedding light on the technical hurdles, Barnicoat explained that the bouncing heavily compromised their raw speed throughout a difficult session. The team experimented with several aerodynamic and mechanical adjustments on the fly, but unfortunately, those strategic tweaks failed to yield the desired performance gains.
Despite starting deep down the order, the British driver remained remarkably confident about their prospects in the upcoming three-hour endurance race. Drawing inspiration from their recent podium finish at the Nurburgring, he warned competitors that the outfit is fully prepared to give it everything to fight back toward the front.
Reinforced by a top-tier driver lineup and the presence of a four-time world champion within their ranks, the team is wasting no time. Having identified the exact root cause of their setup woes, Verstappen Racing is ready to put in the hard work and charge through the field when the lights go out.
