Audi boss Allan McNish has detailed the challenging fight-back mission the team was forced to launch during the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in Austin. Strong points-scoring aspirations were severely compromised following an unusual mechanical hiccup on Nico Hulkenberg's machine right when the race got underway.
The German driver had lined up in a promising 11th position on the grid. However, as the lights went out, his car unexpectedly bogged down after triggering the anti-stall system, forcing him to plummet down into the lower midfield as rival cars stormed past him.
Despite the early setback, Hulkenberg mounted an impressive recovery drive, which included a brilliant stint of 29 laps on a single set of soft compound tyres. He ultimately fought his way back to finish exactly where he had started in 11th place.

The veteran racer crossed the line just 7.439 seconds behind the Alpine challenger driven by Pierre Gasly, narrowly missing out on securing what would have been his sixth points finish of the current season.
Meanwhile, teammate Audi stablemate charged through the field from 21st on the grid following an engine penalty to finish a commendable 13th. McNish insisted there were plenty of encouraging signs despite the recovery drive being forced upon them.
The raw pace of the car looked extremely competitive relative to direct midfield rivals. Furthermore, the team highlighted exceptional tyre preservation capabilities, noting that they could easily extend the lifespan of the soft rubber before opting for alternative strategies.
Recounting the incident, Hulkenberg described the peculiar feeling in the cockpit when the system engaged unexpectedly after he had already covered several meters off the line. The team intends to investigate the root cause.
Although the botched opening lap ultimately cost them a shot at the top ten, the overall operational execution, raw speed, and racing prowess displayed throughout the weekend provided a solid foundation for future rounds.
