Ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, Aston Martin has announced a major off-track move. The Silverstone-based squad has officially sold a minority stake to American billionaire Woody Johnson, heir to the $20.5 billion Johnson & Johnson empire. The decision comes as the team looks to expand its footprint in the rapidly growing US market.
Johnson, who also owns NFL team the New York Jets, will immediately join the Board of Directors as Vice Chairman. However, he will not be involved in the day-to-day operations of the racing team. This is a purely strategic investment, not a technical intervention. Lawrence Stroll remains in full control as majority owner, with a stake of around 33 percent, and will continue to lead the Aston Martin project in F1.
This news adds to the list of foreign investors interested in putting money into F1. For Aston Martin, Johnson's arrival is expected to open up collaborative opportunities in US sports, marketing, and sponsorship. Moreover, Johnson has prior experience as a US ambassador to the UK during the Trump administration.

In the team's official release, Johnson expressed his enthusiasm. "During my time as U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, I have developed a deep appreciation for Aston Martin's rich history, as well as Lawrence Stroll's strategic vision and entrepreneurial spirit," he said. "I am excited to partner with him and contribute to the continued development of the Team, with the ambition of building an organisation capable of competing at the very highest level of the sport. We also share a commitment to growing the fanbase in the United States."
Lawrence Stroll also warmly welcomed Johnson. "I am extremely happy to welcome Woody to the Aston Martin family," said Stroll. "His experience, passion and investment further strengthen our position as we enter the next phase of our competitive journey. His deep appreciation for our brand, combined with his commitment to innovation and commercial opportunity, makes him an ideal partner."
Sportingly, Aston Martin arrives at Zandvoort with positive momentum after its Hungarian GP upgrade package delivered promising results. The team will try to build on that to climb the midfield. With additional funding and business network from Johnson, the team's future off the track looks brighter as well.
