Jorge Martin has revealed that arm pump caused his slump in the San Marino Grand Prix on Sunday (8/9). The Aprilia rider led the race early on after an incident involving his teammate Marco Bezzecchi, but his performance suddenly dipped after taking the lead.
Speaking to TNT, Martin said he was happy with his performance in the first half of the race. "I'm really happy about my performance in the first half of the race. Looking back to Friday and all the struggles that I had, and today overtaking Marc for the lead, was super nice. I think we have to be proud of the job of the team," he said.
However, he acknowledged a big opportunity was lost. "For sure I think we lost a big opportunity today. I had a chance to win, I think. But I was struggling with arm pump, I couldn't brake anymore, I was completely out of control of my bike. I was just waiting till the race finished," he added.

The issue has bothered Martin since Friday, something he never experienced at Misano before. Now, he faces a question mark for the rest of the season. Arm pump, or compartment syndrome, is a common ailment for MotoGP riders caused by pressure buildup in the arm muscles that compromises blood and oxygen flow.
Martin previously underwent arm pump surgery in 2019 when he was starting his Moto2 career, and he was able to have the operation without missing any races. However, that doesn't guarantee he will be completely free from the problem. The next two races, at the Red Bull Ring and Motegi, could test his arm fitness.
"Now I don't have enough time to do anything for Austria so I'm just trying to recover. I think, honestly, Austria is not a race where I will suffer from arm pump - but looking towards the end of the season, we need to understand if it's better to undergo surgery after Austria or not," Martin explained.
With the Misano result, Marc Marquez has drawn level on points with Martin and leads the championship on countback. This is a blow for Martin, who had been leading the championship. The decision on surgery will be crucial in the title fight.
