The McLaren squad suffered a bitter disappointment at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez after dominating practice sessions and showing dominant pace early in qualifying. Hopes were sky-high that Lando Norris would fight for top honors, but the British driver had to settle for sixth place on the grid, while teammate Oscar Piastri suffered an unexpected elimination earlier in Q2.

Team principal Andrea Stella offered a detailed technical breakdown to explain the sudden loss of competitive edge during the crucial pole-position shootout. The Italian engineer admitted that the car felt significantly stronger compared to the previous outing in Austin, creating genuine optimism within the garage.

"The car looked much more competitive here than during the last qualifying session in Austin. At times it even looked like we could fight for pole position, so we started qualifying with a lot of optimism," Stella stated.

Elaborating further on the handling traits, Stella pointed out that the unpredictable nature of the chassis reemerged when drivers tried to push harder on the limit. The sudden loss of grip under braking and cornering severely hampered both drivers as gusty winds complicated matters further.

"I believe at the beginning of qualifying the performance was still there. However, the car eventually showed the inconsistency that we have observed throughout the year, and that made life difficult for Oscar in Q2 and Lando in Q3," he continued.

"When the drivers try to push a bit more because they feel the grip is there, it suddenly disappears. That is a strange behavior of the car that makes life very difficult for the drivers, and I think it gets exacerbated when conditions are tricky," concluded the team boss.
