Alpine has finally broken its silence. After a wave of online abuse targeted Lando Norris, the Enstone-based team issued a strong statement calling for solidarity against hate speech in the digital world. It all began with a chain-reaction crash at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last weekend involving Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, and Norris himself.
The incident occurred during Saturday's race at the Baku City Circuit. Colapinto, driving for Alpine, triggered a three-car collision that eliminated himself, his teammate Gasly, and McLaren's Norris. Norris, who was leading the drivers' championship at the time, couldn't hide his frustration. In a post-race interview, he called for Colapinto to receive a one-race ban. That remark immediately sparked a fierce backlash, especially from Argentine fans who flooded Norris's social media channels with mockery and threats.
In response, Alpine released an official statement that not only defended its driver but also condemned all forms of abuse targeting anyone in the Formula 1 community. "As a team, we feel it's necessary to speak out once more about the hate and abuse online following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix," Alpine said in the statement. "Not only aimed at one of our own drivers, but also members of the Formula One community, including media, and to our racing counterparts who we respect, admire, and revel competing against in the pinnacle of motorsport."
Alpine emphasized that mistakes are part of racing when drivers push to the limit. However, there is no excuse for responding with hate speech. "Mistakes happen when racing at the limit and no matter the result or outcome, nobody should be subject to hateful or abusive comments," the statement continued. They also stressed that condemning abuse is not an attack on any particular fan base, but a universal call to all fans of the sport.
This is not the first time Alpine has spoken out. Previously, Flavio Briatore, a powerful figure in the team, threatened an Argentine media blackout after Colapinto's fans directed abuse at Gasly. That firm stance shows the team is serious about protecting its drivers from verbal attacks online. "We know as a proud participant and stakeholder in the sport, we hold a responsibility to speak out and also help support in finding a solution," Alpine asserted.
Colapinto has taken full responsibility for the incident. He apologized to Alpine, Norris, and Gasly. As a consequence, the young Argentine driver will serve a five-place grid penalty at the next race. However, punishment on track should not lead to personal attacks on social media. Norris, who is fighting to defend his world title, became the victim of a storm of harsh comments, largely from Colapinto's fans.
Alpine closed its statement with a commitment to continue working with the championship promoter, rights holder, and the FIA. The goal is clear: to find effective ways to tackle online abuse and encourage healthy sporting rivalry that is the hallmark of Formula 1.
