Alonso Criticises F1 Backmarker Standards After United States GP Clash

Fernando Alonso unleashed a scathing attack on Alex Albon following a first-lap collision during the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in Austin. The opening-lap contact severely damaged the floor of his Aston Martin charger and instantly cost the two-time world champion multiple critical positions.

Starting from 12th on the grid, the veteran Spaniard initially dropped a position off the line as Esteban Ocon surged past from 15th to 11th. Meanwhile, Albon executed a clean launch to claim three places up to 14th, immediately challenging Alonso through the twisting Esses section on the opening tour.

Approaching Turn 11, Alonso attempted an aggressive inside move on the battling Haas cars into the left-hander. However, Albon had committed to a nearly identical trajectory as the gap rapidly closed, resulting in the Williams' front-right wheel crashing directly into Alonso's left-hand bargeboard and floor edge.

The impact forced Alonso wide onto the outer kerb and dropped him another four places down the order. Despite suffering visible aerodynamic floor damage that prompted him to seriously consider retiring the car in the garage, the Spaniard soldiered on to finish 12th at the chequered flag to collect vital data.

Reflecting on the dramatic clash, Alonso did not hold back his frustration regarding the driving standards at the rear of the field. That was the biggest damage, I think we lost half a second or more per lap, the car is destroyed and half of the floor is not there, Alonso stated to the media.

When you start at the back, there is this risk always, he concluded. I think the quality of the drivers in the low third of the grid is very low, as we saw today with Alex. So I think we need to improve the car and start a little bit higher up.
