Alex Dunne stormed to a commanding victory in the first Formula 2 Feature Race at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The RODIN driver converted his pole position into a lights-to-flag win, reigniting his championship charge in the process.
According to Motorsport Week, Alex Dunne was untouchable from the moment the lights went out. He got a clean launch and immediately pulled a gap. Behind him, teammate Martinius Stenshorne had to fend off a hard-charging Noel Leon from Campos Racing. The Norwegian managed to hold on, but it was a tense battle.
RODIN had been the team to beat all weekend. They locked out the front row in qualifying, with Dunne on pole and Stenshorne alongside. It was a clear statement of intent. Meanwhile, championship contenders Rafael Camara and Nikola Tsolov could only manage fifth and tenth on the grid, giving the RODIN duo a golden opportunity.
Even before the start, drama struck. Only 21 cars took to the grid after Sebastian Montoya crashed on the reconnaissance laps. Hiyu Yamakoshi also stalled, dropping to the back. The tight streets of Baku promised chaos, and it didn't disappoint.
The first pit stops brought more twists. Points leader Tsolov suffered a slow stop with Campos and was hit with a five-second penalty for a pit lane infringement, plummeting down the order. Camara, on the other hand, was flying. He passed Leon and set his sights on the RODIN pair.
A safety car, triggered by Mari Boya stopping on track, bunched the field up. Dunne and Camara pitted under the caution. On the restart, Dunne held firm at the front, while Camara struggled and lost momentum. Stenshorne recovered from a difficult middle stint to secure second, completing a RODIN 1-2.
Dino Beganovic took third, his second podium of the day. The result blows the championship wide open. Dunne is back in the hunt, while Tsolov and Camara leave Baku with work to do. Feature Race 2 promises even more fireworks.
