The return of Aleix Espargaro to the premier class paddock at the Indonesian Grand Prix brings an emotional narrative and a fresh challenge following a lengthy absence due to a severe back injury. The veteran test rider's presence was confirmed after Joan Mir suffered a mysterious illness and Takaaki Nakagami was sidelined due to an unfortunate crash injury at the previous Japanese Grand Prix. This reunion with the paddock veteran was marked by the feeling that it has been a long time, considering his last appearance as a regular rider took place at the 2025 season finale in Valencia.
The grueling rehabilitation process proved to be the toughest hurdle for the Spaniard following a horrific testing crash at Sepang aboard the previous generation 1000cc Honda machine. Reflecting on his recovery, Aleix Espargaro opened up about the physical toll of the past six months. I don’t think everyone realised just how tough the year was for me, we’re talking about six very tough months, he stated regarding the intense period he had to endure to get back on a motorcycle.
Although he still battles lingering back pain that may persist for the rest of his life, the opportunity to return with the factory squad has provided immense motivation. Life has given me this chance to return to the best team in the world, HRC, that makes me happy and I’m really motivated as a result, he noted regarding his unexpected comeback at Mandalika. However, he admitted to harboring some apprehension given the incredible level at which his rivals are currently performing on track.

Immediate technical hurdles also await him as he has not yet ridden the newer 850cc specification machine at all. With his fellow stablemate not ready to race yet, a demanding schedule lies ahead, including a crucial official test immediately following the Indonesian GP weekend. This packed agenda makes him hopeful that his friend Joan Mir can make a quick comeback and finish the season strongly with the Japanese manufacturer.
Meanwhile, the returning veteran remains thrilled by the intense World Championship action unfolding at the front of the grid. When asked about his predictions for the title fight and the race winner, he expressed support for his close friend Jorge Martin and acknowledged the stellar performance of Marc Marquez, highlighting the emotional ties he still holds with his former manufacturer Aprilia.
Aleix Espargaro returns to racing action to fill in for injured and ill riders at Mandalika.
