MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Aleix Espargaro, test rider for Honda, has been discharged from hospital after undergoing complex surgery following serious injuries sustained in a MotoGP testing crash at Sepang.

The three-time grand prix winner suffered multiple vertebral fractures in what he described as “the worst fall of my sporting career” during a private test earlier this month. The session was part of Honda’s ongoing development programme for both the current 1000cc prototype and the future 850cc concept aligned with upcoming regulations.

The exact circumstances of the crash have not been publicly detailed, but Aleix Espargaro was testing alongside Takaaki Nakagami during the session. Upon returning to Spain, he underwent a six-hour operation to fuse four fractured vertebrae.

The procedure was described as complex but successful, allowing Aleix Espargaro to continue his recovery at home. He provided an update via social media, outlining both the physical and emotional impact of the incident.

“I’m back home. Thank you all for the incredible support. Time for a mandatory break, but I’m happy to be home,” he said.

“It was the worst crash of my sporting career, a very serious injury, many days in hospital, and a complicated operation.”

He also highlighted the psychological challenges during recovery, particularly the limitations on daily activity and the impact on his family.

“The hardest part hasn’t been the pain, but the fear—being unable to do anything and seeing my family adapt to my pace, my timing, my limits.”

There is no confirmed timeline for his return to MotoGP duties, but it has been confirmed that Aleix Espargaro will miss the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez, where he previously made a wildcard appearance with Honda.

The injury situation also extends to Pol Espargaro, who has been ruled out of the same event. He had been scheduled to replace Maverick Vinales at Tech3, but remains sidelined due to fitness concerns.

From a technical perspective, the absence of Aleix Espargaro represents a setback for Honda’s development programme during a critical transition phase. His experience and feedback are key components in refining the prototype, particularly as MotoGP moves toward its next regulatory cycle.

The coming rounds will therefore not only shape Honda’s competitive trajectory but also determine how effectively the manufacturer can compensate for the temporary loss of one of its primary development riders.
