The 2026 Formula 1 season has proven to be an exceptionally steep mountain to climb for Aston Martin following the high-profile arrival of legendary car designer Adrian Newey. When the aerodynamic master left Red Bull Racing to join the Silverstone-based outfit, insiders widely anticipated an immediate surge toward the front of the grid, heavily bolstered by the arrival of Honda as an exclusive power unit partner.
Reality on the tarmac has told a starkly different story. After completing 17 Grands Prix and 6 sprint races, the team finds itself languishing in second-to-last place in the constructors' standings, ahead of only newcomer Cadillac, having scraped together a meager seven championship points.
Speaking at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas, Adrian Newey candidly addressed the difficult phase currently confronting their engine supplier. The acclaimed British designer acknowledged that the Japanese manufacturer is undoubtedly dissatisfied with the rate of technical progress achieved over the course of the current campaign.

«I think it's fair to say that Honda is probably disappointed with themselves regarding the progress they've made this year,» Newey stated during the race weekend in Texas.
Despite the current performance deficit, Newey emphasized that adversity serves as a catalyst for future resolve within the organization. He praised the strong determination harbored by the engineers as they strive to rectify their shortcomings under the stringent current technical regulations.
«But as is so often the case in this situation, adversity only strengthens the will to do better in the future. The Honda people are very determined. But things just don't change overnight in Formula 1. Honda now has a lot of good people on board, and the processes have been optimized,» he added.
Evaluating where the power unit manufacturer stands in a broader historical context, the 67-year-old drew parallels to their previous successful partnership era, indicating that the current developmental hurdles present a unique set of challenges.
«At the moment Honda is behind the point where they started their journey with Red Bull in 2019. Back then, they were already four years back in the premier class,» Newey explained.
Looking ahead, Newey remains steadfast in his endorsement of the manufacturer's engineering pedigree, expressing total confidence that upcoming iterations will show substantial gains as they fully grasp the intricacies of the current power unit rules.
«Honda is a great company. I have full confidence that they will now move forward quickly and better understand the problems of these specific PU regulations,» he concluded.
