Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Adrian Newey has revealed that Aston Martin will heavily restrict the race distance of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll during the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 2026 at Albert Park Circuit due to severe vibration issues affecting the AMR26.
The problem originates from the Honda power unit used by the Silverstone-based team this season. According to Newey, the vibrations generated by the engine are not only affecting the structural integrity and reliability of the car, but are also being transmitted through the steering wheel and into the drivers’ hands.
The issue has already compromised Aston Martin’s pre-season programme, limiting track running and exposing several reliability problems. Components such as mirrors and rear lights have reportedly detached due to the excessive vibration generated by the power unit during testing.

Speaking during a media session ahead of the opening round in Melbourne, Newey acknowledged that the AMR26 is currently unable to safely complete a full grand prix distance under race conditions.
“The vibration going into the chassis is causing a few reliability problems – mirrors falling off, tail lights falling off, that sort of thing – which we are having to address,” Newey said.
“But the much more significant problem is that vibration is transmitted ultimately into the driver’s fingers.”
Newey explained that Alonso believes he cannot drive more than 25 consecutive laps before risking permanent nerve damage in his hands. Stroll’s tolerance threshold is even lower.
“Fernando is of the feeling that he can’t do more than 25 laps consecutively before he risks permanent nerve damage in his hands. Lance is of the opinion that he can’t do more than 15 laps before reaching that threshold,” Newey added.
As a result, Aston Martin will impose strict limits on how many laps its drivers complete during the race while engineers work to identify the root cause of the vibration.
The team is expected to collaborate closely with Honda Racing Corporation in order to resolve the issue and improve the vibration levels at the source of the problem.
Until a technical solution is found, Aston Martin faces a challenging start to the Formula 1 2026 season, with the Melbourne opener highlighting the difficulties of its new partnership with Honda.
