The Lusail International Circuit once again served as a stage for intense drama. Under the brilliant floodlights of the Qatari desert, Fabio di Giannantonio stole the spotlight by topping the 2026 Qatar MotoGP Practice session. The VR46 Racing Team rider clocked a new lap record of 1m 50.406s, proving that raw talent can overcome technical limitations.

However, behind the impressive lap time lies a bittersweet feeling haunting the rider. Despite being the fastest, Di Giannantonio is still grappling with a mysterious top-speed deficit on his GP26. He languished in 12th place through the speed trap, 5.5km/h slower than the other factory-spec machines.

“Bittersweet feeling, honestly,” Di Giannantonio told MotoGP.com. “I’m super happy for the end of the day, super happy for the lap, super happy for the feeling. But a bittersweet feeling because we saw that we could have done some mistakes here and there in the last GPs.”

The progress he showed in the afternoon stemmed from crucial adjustments in braking and corner entry. After trailing championship leader Marc Marquez by two seconds in the morning, the VR46 squad successfully found a more competitive set-up. Marquez himself, currently leading the title race, looked solid in second place, reinforcing his status as the primary championship contender.

Meanwhile, Aprilia Racing's Marco Bezzecchi displayed consistent race pace, finishing third. Nevertheless, Di Giannantonio remains optimistic heading into qualifying. “I never struggle here for race pace; I think we have a good bike for that, and I've always been a good manager of the tyres. But, first of all, we need to do a proper qualifying,” he added.

The rivalry in Lusail is heating up. With Marquez lurking and technical issues still clouding the Ducati camp, tomorrow's qualifying session promises to be a crucial turning point for the riders' title ambitions in this season finale.
