2026 Japanese MotoGP Rider Rankings: Marquez Rules Motegi

The two main MotoGP title contenders separated themselves from the field again in the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi, leaving paddock analysts to debate whether Marc Marquez and his 37-point haul rightfully claim P1 in the rider rankings. Val breaks down the intense weekend action where small margins made all the difference under revised track conditions and tyre allocations.

Qualifying second before securing a clean sweep in both the Sprint and the Grand Prix, Marc Marquez delivered one of his most straightforward P1 selections of the season. While the Ducati did not possess the clear-cut advantage over Aprilia that some anticipated at Motegi, Marquez himself provided the decisive edge. From Friday through Sunday, he remained completely in tune with the circuit's new surface, maintaining relentless consistency to convert P2 into P1 twice.

Championship-spec Jorge Martin also showed up strongly, proving that Marquez will not have an easy path to the crown. Friday had threatened a disastrous weekend when Martin needed assistance from Pedro Acosta just to scrape into Q2, but an unbelievable overnight improvement turned his fortunes around. Excessive tyre spin and a brush with the green paint on the final lap compromised his Saturday Sprint, but his Sunday performance was exceptionally strong despite the impossibility of holding off Marquez.

Meanwhile, Enea Bastianini enjoyed a brilliant throwback weekend reminiscent of his best form on the RC16. Overcoming early-weekend struggles with a breakthrough in qualifying, the Italian showcased immense race pace. Finishing well clear of his stablemate, Bastianini firmly established himself as the benchmark rider for KTM at Motegi.

Further down the order, Fabio Quartararo continued his strong run of form since late August. Operating as Yamaha's undisputed standard-bearer, he extracted the maximum from his package despite battling excessive fuel consumption early in the main race, sealing another professional points-scoring finish.
