MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Marc Marquez, the star rider for Ducati, is on the cusp of one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history, according to fellow Spaniard Pedro Acosta. Acosta compares Marquez’s potential seventh MotoGP title in 2025 to the legendary comeback of NBA icon Michael Jordan.
A Comparison to Michael Jordan
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the 2025 Catalan Grand Prix, KTM rider Acosta praised Marquez’s resilience. “I said weeks ago that Marc will win the championship,” Acosta stated. “When he does, it will be one of the greatest comebacks in sports history, like Michael Jordan switching to baseball and returning to dominate basketball.” Acosta added that Marquez deserves a place alongside Spanish icons like Rafael Nadal, Fernando Alonso, and Pau Gasol.
Marquez, who clinched six MotoGP titles with Honda from 2013 to 2019, faced a career setback after a broken arm in Jerez 2020, compounded by diplopia and uncompetitive bikes. Since MotoGP’s inception in 1949, no rider has reclaimed the premier class title after more than three consecutive years without a championship. Marquez has now gone five seasons without a crown.
Revival with Ducati
Marquez’s move to Gresini last season marked a turning point. In 2025, he joined the factory Ducati team and delivered an extraordinary performance, winning 10 of 14 Grands Prix and 14 consecutive races, including Sprints. With a commanding points lead, Marquez could secure the 2025 title as early as Misano, with six rounds remaining.
This resurgence highlights Marquez’s mental fortitude and adaptability. After years of battling injuries and technical challenges, he has returned to peak form, competing against riders like Francesco Bagnaia and Acosta.
Impact on MotoGP
Acosta emphasized that Marquez’s achievement transcends personal success, setting a new benchmark in MotoGP. No rider has ever reclaimed the title after a five-year drought. “This will be one of the greatest comebacks in sport,” Acosta reiterated, underscoring Marquez’s dedication and perseverance.
With a potential title win in Misano, Marquez is poised to cement his legacy as one of MotoGP’s all-time greats. His success with Ducati demonstrates the impact of strategic team changes. Fans now await whether Marquez will make history in the remaining 2025 races.
