Dakar, Sportrik Media – Julian Johan, widely known as Jeje, has made history for Indonesian motorsport by competing in the Rally Dakar 2026, ending a 14 year absence of Indonesian representation at the world’s toughest cross country rally.
Competing in the car category with a Toyota Land Cruiser 100, Jeje is partnered by French co driver Mathieu Monplaisir and delivered a strong opening performance. On the first Special Stage on January 5, 2026, he secured a top six result in the H2 class, underlining his rapid adaptation to the extreme conditions of the Saudi Arabian desert.
That consistency continued into Special Stage 2, where Jeje maintained a competitive position despite facing soft sand, sharp rocks and complex navigation. From the outset, the team’s strategy focused on vehicle preservation and rhythm management rather than outright pace, a critical approach in a long distance rally governed by FIA regulations.
The biggest challenge came during the marathon stages, Special Stage 4 and 5, around the Al Ula region. According to reports as of January 9, 2026, Jeje’s car developed a clutch problem that began to slip from the start of SS4. Under Dakar Rally marathon stage rules, no external mechanical assistance is permitted, making the issue particularly severe.
Despite being forced to reduce speed and drive cautiously to protect the damaged components, Jeje managed to complete SS4 and continue into SS5. The decision reflected a strategic focus on survival and long term progress rather than risking retirement by pushing for stage times.
At the midpoint of the 2026 Dakar Rally, Julian Johan remains on course to reach the final finish line on January 17, with his primary objective being to bring the Indonesian flag to the end of the rally, a mission that has drawn growing attention from the national motorsport community at https://sportrik.com/en.
