Zonta van den Goorbergh experienced a dramatic turnaround during the Moto2 qualifying day at the Lusail International Circuit, balancing a breakthrough performance with a late regulatory setback. The Dutch rider showcased remarkable pace by fighting his way through Q1 entirely on his own merit, setting competitive lap times without relying on a tow from rival competitors.
Carrying that momentum into the decisive Q2 session, the Momoven Idrofoglia RW Racing Team representative extracted maximum performance from a single fresh set of tires. He clocked a strong lap time of 1’56.179 to claim fifteenth place on the provisional timesheets, successfully narrowing the performance gap to the front-runners compared to previous practice sessions.
“We can say that it has been a very good day. In Q1 we were very strong and finished in second place, while I was riding alone. Also in Q2 we were quite competitive and ultimately finished in fifteenth position, with a very small gap to the front,” reflected Zonta van den Goorbergh regarding his strong progression on track.

Despite the strong on-track form, the stewards handed down post-qualifying sanctions. Both the Dutch rider and his stablemate, Ayumu Sasaki, received a three-place grid penalty alongside several other intermediate class competitors for allegedly impeding opposing riders during the busy qualifying runs.
Consequently, his hard-earned fifteenth grid spot was demoted to eighteenth position for the upcoming race start, while his Japanese teammate was pushed back to twenty-first on the grid. The squad now shifts absolute focus toward a challenging 18-lap Grand Prix battle.
