Johann Zarco will make his MotoGP return earlier than expected at next weekend's Aragon Grand Prix. The LCR Honda rider will be back on track two weeks ahead of schedule, following a serious knee injury sustained in a multi-rider crash at the Catalan Grand Prix in mid-May.
The Frenchman was caught in a Turn 1 pile-up, getting trapped between the seat and rear wheel of Pecco Bagnaia's factory Ducati during the race restart, after a high-speed collision between Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta's malfunctioning KTM.
Zarco tore his medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments, but his posterior cruciate ligament remained intact, allowing doctors to opt for a non-surgical recovery. Initial projections suggested he could return before the end of the 2026 season, with an original target of the San Marino Grand Prix next month, based on his strong progress in early July.

However, Zarco's recovery has accelerated. In recent days, he has been riding supermoto and a Honda Fireblade, and after being cleared by his medical team, he has decided to bring forward his comeback to the premier class.
"Zarco's recovery has continued to improve in recent weeks, allowing him to bring forward his return to racing," his team said in a statement. "He has gradually increased his workload, riding both a supermoto and a Honda CBR1000RR as part of his rehabilitation. Having made steady progress and received clearance from his medical team to resume racing, Zarco will travel to Aragon with the aim of returning to competition, subject to passing the mandatory medical assessment at the circuit."
Zarco expressed his excitement: "I'm pretty happy with how the knee is progressing and recovering. I feel good enough to jump back on the MotoGP bike, and I'm really looking forward to getting back to racing. The Supermoto and CBR have been great for building up the intensity and doing long runs. I've really missed my team, racing and the paddock, so I can't wait to be back in Aragon!"
This news also marks the end of Cal Crutchlow's stint as stand-in, who has replaced Zarco for the past six rounds, including a home race at Silverstone. Zarco will also have to serve a double long-lap penalty for his role in the crash that injured him.
