Johann Zarco is expected to face a recovery period lasting “a couple of months” after undergoing knee surgery following his major accident at the 2026 Catalan MotoGP. LCR Honda boss Lucio Cecchinello confirmed the French rider is expected to make a full recovery, although the rehabilitation process cannot be accelerated because of the complexity of the injuries involved.
Zarco suffered damage to both the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments alongside injuries to the medial meniscus after crashing during the Catalunya restart. The accident occurred when Zarco became tangled with the rear wheel of Francesco Bagnaia’s Ducati during the Turn 1 incident.
The Catalunya crash has once again raised concerns regarding the intensity of opening-lap incidents in modern MotoGP, particularly since the introduction of Sprint races. With increasingly aggressive position battles at the start and modern MotoGP bikes becoming faster and more aerodynamically demanding, the risk of major injuries during race starts and restarts has significantly increased.

“I had a personal talk with the doctor who will perform Johann’s knee surgery in the next few days,” Cecchinello told MotoGP.com at Mugello.
“He said he has no doubt that Johann will come back 100 percent. The knee will recover completely after the surgery.”
Despite the positive outlook regarding the operation itself, Cecchinello explained that doctors are waiting until after surgery before providing a more accurate timeline for Zarco’s return. However, he confirmed the recovery period will be lengthy.
“The doctor prefers to wait until after the surgery before being more precise about the recovery time,” he explained.
“But it will definitely take a couple of months. Physiologically, there is a process that simply cannot be accelerated.”
Zarco’s absence has forced LCR Honda to bring back Cal Crutchlow as a temporary replacement at Mugello. The former MotoGP race winner with LCR returns to the premier-class grid almost three years after his last full MotoGP appearance.
Meanwhile, the Italian Grand Prix will also be missing another key rider after Alex Marquez was ruled out because of back injuries sustained during the huge opening-start accident at Catalunya before the restart took place.
Gresini team manager Michele Masini explained that Alex’s condition is gradually improving but that further medical evaluation will be required over the next two weeks before any decision can be made regarding a possible return at Brno.
“Alex feels slightly better day by day,” Masini said.
“We need to wait another two weeks before carrying out more examinations and evaluating his condition. The priority right now is making sure the recovery continues positively day by day.”
The situations involving Zarco and Alex Marquez underline how modern MotoGP intensity is increasingly pushing the physical safety limits of riders, especially during the opening phase of races. With aerodynamic regulations and sprint formats continuing to increase grid aggression, Turn 1 safety is expected to remain one of the major discussion points between riders, teams, and the FIM throughout the remainder of the 2026 season.
