MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Yamaha garnered significant attention with its V4 engine prototype testing for MotoGP 2027 at Misano, Italy, on September 15-16, 2025. However, critical feedback from Fabio Quartararo and technical issues encountered by test rider Augusto Fernandez highlight the challenges in transitioning from the inline-4 engine. Below is a detailed analysis of the test.
Fabio Quartararo’s Assessment of the V4 Prototype
Fabio Quartararo, Yamaha’s lead rider, offered a sobering evaluation of the V4 prototype. Firstly, he noted that the bike lacked the standout qualities he expected, a sentiment echoed from his initial test in Jerez. Secondly, straight-line speed remained a concern, despite the V4’s anticipated advantage in acceleration. “The prototype has potential, but it’s far from ready and needs extensive development,” Quartararo stated, emphasizing the long road ahead for Yamaha.
Technical Setbacks During Testing
The public debut of the V4 prototype at Misano was marred by technical difficulties. During FP1 of the San Marino Grand Prix, Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez was forced to pull off the track due to issues with the V4 bike. Although Fernandez resumed testing with a spare bike, the incident underscored the prototype’s early-stage development and lack of reliability. Fernandez ultimately finished 19th, highlighting the performance gap between the prototype and Yamaha’s primary bike.

Why Yamaha is Switching to V4
Yamaha aims to close the gap with competitors like Ducati, KTM, and Aprilia, all of which dominate with V4 engines. Following Suzuki’s exit from MotoGP, Yamaha remains the only manufacturer using an inline-4 engine, which Quartararo has criticized for its poor acceleration and performance in group battles. The V4 engine promises better rear tire traction due to longer power cycle intervals, enabling faster acceleration and improved corner exits.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Yamaha’s shift to a V4 engine is a critical step to regain competitiveness in MotoGP, particularly with the 2027 regulations reducing engine capacity to 850cc. However, Quartararo’s critique and Fernandez’s technical issues reveal significant hurdles. By focusing on enhancing traction and speed, Yamaha aims to refine the V4 prototype to challenge the top teams by 2027.
