Oscar Piastri was forced to yield his position to his teammate during the opening stages of the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of The Americas. Starting the race from the fourth row after missing out on the front-running pace in qualifying, Piastri initially struggled to find his optimal rhythm. Over the first seven laps, the Australian driver lost significant time to the leaders and could not keep pace with George Russell ahead, falling further behind by tenths of a second per lap.
This situation prompted Lando Norris to report over the team radio that he was being held up by his teammate. Responding to the feedback, the McLaren pit wall quickly instructed Piastri to let his teammate through at Turn 1 on lap eight, an instruction that was promptly executed without any friction on the track.
Andrea Stella explained that this dynamic had already been anticipated based on performance data gathered throughout the weekend in Austin. According to the team boss, the circuit layout heavily suits Norris's natural superpower of adapting instantly to sliding track conditions, whereas Piastri historically requires more time to build reference pointslap by lap.
