Why 2027 MotoGP Format Revamp Divides Grid Riders

MotoGP’s 2027 weekend format revamp has drawn anger from some riders and unsubtle attempts at diplomacy from others, while also being welcomed by a sizeable proportion of the paddock. Next year introduces a separate, 15-minute, full field qualifying session for the sprint straight after a shortened half-hour afternoon practice session on Friday.

Under the revised system, all riders will participate in grand prix Q1 on Saturday morning, with the top 12 advancing directly into Q2. This replaces the current system where the Friday practice top 10 secure direct Q2 spots, leaving the rest of the field to fight for two remaining spots. Furthermore, the Sunday morning warm-up session is removed, offering extended sighting laps to the grid as recompense.

KTM's Pedro Acosta emerged as the most openly critical voice against the sweeping adjustments. "We have no choice, it doesn't really matter what we think about it, but it will be a really tough year because you know how much stress a rider has during a MotoGP weekend," he stated bluntly regarding the relentless schedule.

Highlighting the sheer physical and mental toll, Acosta pointed out the compounding danger of the calendar. "We already have many sessions in which we have to risk everything—like practice, qualifying, sprint, main race - and we have it 22 times two, because we have a sprint race every weekend," he added, emphasizing the relentless high-stress environment.

Title contenders Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez echoed similar concerns over mounting demands. "For sure the entertainment will be bigger, but also the risk," Martin noted. Marquez added, "It’s interesting to understand what is the main goal of that change because for the rider, it's only more intensity, more demanding, and with the actual schedule it's enough. But we don't decide. It's what it is, and we must adapt."
