Kimi Antonelli's victory at the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix has brought him closer to his first F1 world championship. The Mercedes driver now leads the standings by 81 points over his teammate George Russell. No other driver is within 100 points of the Italian.
Antonelli, who turned 20 in August 2026, has been dominant all season. If he maintains his form, he will become the youngest F1 world champion in history, breaking Sebastian Vettel's record of 23 years, 4 months, and 11 days. He would also become the first Italian world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
With nine races remaining, each worth 25 points, a total of 225 points are still available. Adding the 8 points from the Singapore Sprint, the total becomes 233 points. With an 81-point lead, Antonelli needs 152 more points to secure the title. If this scenario unfolds, he would clinch the championship at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, with three races left worth 75 points.

However, there is a possibility that the 2026 F1 calendar could lose a race. The Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix are not expected to take place due to uncertainty in the region caused by the Iran War. Imola is widely expected to host the season finale on December 6th, making it a 23-race season.
Re-calculating for a 23-race season, after the Spanish Grand Prix, the total points available for race wins is 200, increasing to 208 with the Singapore Sprint. This means that with an 81-point lead, Antonelli needs only 127 more points to secure the title. In this scenario, he is on course to win the championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1st, at the age of 20 years, 2 months, and 8 days.
Antonelli's season has been remarkable. He has consistently outperformed the top drivers and secured strong finishes. With the remaining races, he has a great chance to etch his name in history as the youngest world champion. Of course, anything can happen, but his current points advantage puts him in a very strong position.
We will wait and see if Antonelli can clinch the title in Mexico City or perhaps even earlier. One thing is clear: Mercedes seems to have found a new gem ready to make history.
