The FIA World Endurance Championship is preparing for a significant regulatory overhaul in the LMGT3 class starting from the 2027 season. The championship, which features intense battles among elite global manufacturers, will transition away from the individual car scoring system, moving instead to a combined points structure where two cars under the same entry will be tallied together.
This strategic move by the rulemakers aims to place an even greater focus on overall team performance. A similar regulation has already been successfully utilized in the Hypercar category, where powerhouse brands like Porsche and other manufacturers combine both vehicles to fight for championship glory.
Looking at the operational landscape of the grid, the vast majority of LMGT3 teams already manage two cars under a unified structure. Major automotive brands such as BMW, Ferrari, and Aston Martin field their respective duos through single, dedicated racing outfits throughout the WEC calendar.

Nevertheless, specific adjustments will be required for a handful of camps that previously registered their entries under slightly different banners. For instance, teams running the American Corvette machinery have utilized distinct entry names despite being run by the exact same technical crew, a practice that will likely be streamlined ahead of the 2027 points shift.
This fascinating dynamic will inevitably alter how team principals approach race strategies, driver lineups, and risk management on track. Rather than chasing success with just a single entry, garages must now ensure both cars maximize their points-scoring potential to secure the ultimate LMGT3 championship crown.
