Fred Vasseur has admitted that the clash between his Ferrari drivers on the opening lap of the Italian Grand Prix was “not good for the team”, following a disappointing weekend for the Scuderia at Monza.
The incident occurred when Charles Leclerc defended aggressively against Lewis Hamilton, who tried to overtake his teammate after both started from the second row. Leclerc refused to yield, forcing Hamilton wide at Turn 2 and sending him through the gravel, dropping him to 10th place.
“I spoke to Lewis for two seconds and not at all with Charles,” Vasseur told media on Sunday night. “We'll have time to discuss that. I prefer to discuss with them first and not with you. For sure, the outcome of Turn 1-2 is not good for the team.”
Ferrari has been reluctant to impose team orders this year, despite calls from observers to prioritize Hamilton in the title fight. Vasseur believes such a decision would have been premature before Monza, but hinted that a change could come later in the season.
“Now, to see if we need a team order or whatever, I think the good comparison is last year,” he said. “Piastri was leading McLaren at this stage, and if McLaren had put everything on Piastri, Max Verstappen would have been champion.”
“For sure, at one stage you have to take a decision, but I think it was too early before Monza. Now I will have time to discuss with the guys,” he added.
Leclerc, who retired early after crashing at Parabolica, admitted the first-lap incident was not ideal. “We went too far,” he said. When told of that, Hamilton responded: “I was ahead in Turn 2, by the apex, I was ahead. There was no 'we' in it.”
With Ferrari losing valuable points at their home race, Vasseur now faces a dilemma: let his drivers continue to race freely or implement team orders to maximize championship results.
