Valentino Rossi was left bitterly disappointed after his much-anticipated on-track showdown with Max Verstappen in the GT World Challenge Europe was effectively ruined during a dramatic qualifying session. The motorcycle racing legend was thrilled ahead of the weekend in Portimao, where the two motorsport icons were set to compete in the same race for the very first time. Speaking to Sky Italia prior to the action on track, the Italian icon admitted that while the prospect was fabulous, the Formula 1 star posed a massive problem simply because of his sheer speed.
However, any hopes of an intense wheel-to-wheel battle evaporated when Valentino Rossi saw his strong lap time deleted by race control for exceeding track limits. The penalty relegated the veteran racer and his co-drivers Max Hesse and Neil Verhagen all the way down to 59th on the starting grid for the grueling three-hour endurance race. Meanwhile, the reigning Formula 1 dominator secured a much more favorable 14th place starting position alongside his respective teammates for the weekend's main event.
Reflecting on the setback in his post-session interview, the Italian expressed genuine dismay over the lost opportunity to start near the front of the pack. He emphasized that the deleted lap was quick enough to place them in close proximity to Max Verstappen and their sister car bearing number 32, which would have set up a fantastic tactical battle from the opening laps of the endurance showdown.
Explaining the incident that cost him dearly, the former MotoGP champion detailed how a minor misjudgment at turn four ruined his entire qualifying effort. While he tried to leave a safety margin through most of the tricky corners, traffic and proximity to another car forced him slightly wider than permitted, triggering an automatic deletion of his fastest lap time by the strict officiating system.
Compounding the error, the driver opted against pushing for another flying lap immediately after setting what he thought was a safe benchmark. Getting stuck behind slower traffic on his subsequent tour meant he failed to improve, ultimately leaving him stranded at the very back of the massive grid and extinguishing hopes of an epic multi-class confrontation.
