Lando Norris expressed severe frustration with his performance after qualifying in eighth place for the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at COTA. The McLaren driver initially provisionally grabbed sixth before a track-limits infringement at Turn 19 saw his lap time deleted. This setback dropped him back down the order, forcing him to share the fourth row of the grid with his teammate for Sunday's main race.
This latest qualifying result extends a challenging phase for the Woking-based squad, which has missed out on podium finishes over the last three grand prix weekends. Despite ongoing struggles against rivals who have outdeveloped them, the British driver insisted that the MCL40 possessed enough raw pace to challenge for a front-row start, pointing the finger squarely at his own driving errors during the crucial Q3 shootout.
"The car was very strong today in terms of pace," he said. "Insanely difficult to drive. Probably the hardest car I've ever had to drive in my life. But good enough for P2, so I should be P2 and I'm P8, so clearly, I did a very bad job today." Despite the self-criticism, he maintained optimism regarding his race pace after topping the timesheets earlier in Q1, though acknowledging differing tyre strategies among the front-running pack.

Ultimately, the gap proved substantial as he finished a full second adrift of Mercedes polesitter Kimi Antonelli and 0.835 seconds behind Max Verstappen of Red Bull. While straightline performance and slow-corner deficits through sector three remain a massive headache, the team's weekend is further complicated by the introduction of their final major upgrade package featuring revised front suspension geometry and a tweaked diffuser.
The aerodynamic and mechanical balancing act has created a moving target for engineers and drivers alike. With Oscar Piastri also facing similar handling traits, extracting perfection from the chassis has proven exceptionally elusive, leaving the team searching for answers ahead of the lights-out moment in Austin.
