The Ukrainian Automobile Federation (FAU) has lodged a formal complaint with the FIA regarding the governing body's decision to lift the ban on Russian competitors in international motorsport. The move, reported by Crash.net, has sparked immediate backlash from Kyiv.

The FIA's World Motor Sport Council voted on August 3 to revise emergency measures that had been in place since March 2022, allowing Russian and Belarusian drivers to once again compete under their national flags and anthems. Previously, they were required to race under a neutral FIA banner and sign a commitment to political neutrality.

FAU President Oleksandr Feldman condemned the decision, calling it a clear breach of FIA statutes by the Russian Automobile Federation, which is bound to comply with them. He urged the FIA president to take urgent action and sanction the Russian body for its actions.

In an earlier appeal on August 15, the FAU emphasized that Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine continues and warned that both nations would exploit sport as a tool of state propaganda if allowed to return. The federation also cautioned that the decision could undermine the unity of the international motorsport community.

The FIA's move aligns with a similar decision by the International Olympic Committee, which has also relaxed restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes. The FIA defended its decision as a revision of emergency measures, but the FAU insists that the situation on the ground does not justify such a normalization.

Crash.net has reached out to the FIA for comment, but no official response has been issued yet. This development threatens to deepen divisions within the global motorsport community, as stakeholders weigh the balance between political neutrality and sporting integrity.
