Toyota Gazoo Racing New Zealand has officially introduced their latest race car for the Formula Regional Oceania Trophy. The new chassis, named GRF-70, was unveiled at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park, the home of Toyota Gazoo Racing New Zealand.
The car is based on the second-generation Tatuus chassis that meets FIA Formula Regional regulations, and has been used in Europe through the Formula Regional European Championship (FREC). It is powered by an evolution of the 2.0-liter turbocharged 8AR-FTS engine that has been in use since 2020.
Nicolas Caillol, TGRNZ motorsport manager, explained that choosing the Tatuus chassis was a natural decision given their collaboration of over 20 years. "We started with the FT-40, then the FT-50, and most recently the FT-60, all of which were high-level, high-performance, and safe racing cars. We are confident the GRF-70 will continue that legacy," he said.

The name change from FT (Formula Toyota) to GRF (GR Formula) reflects the integration of the single-seater program into Gazoo Racing DNA. The car has already been tested by New Zealand Grand Prix winner Liam Sceats as part of an intensive testing program ahead of the summer-based season.
One of the significant improvements is in aerodynamics, designed to allow drivers to race closer together and provide better overtaking opportunities. Additionally, driver comfort has been a major focus, with an improved seating position and the ability to accommodate a wider range of driver heights.
"We have a successful and reliable power plant, but we continue to focus on continuous improvement," added Caillol. With 22 new cars to be built, they will be released to teams on the Monday before the first race weekend to ensure a level playing field.
