Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Toto Wolff and Mercedes are reportedly interested in acquiring a minority stake in the Alpine Formula 1 team, a move that could place Wolff in direct competition with former paddock rival Christian Horner. The potential investment centres around shares currently held by a group of private investors.
A consortium led by private investment firm Otro Capital holds approximately 24 percent of Alpine, while parent company Renault retains the remaining 76 percent. The investor group includes several high-profile figures such as actors Ryan Reynolds and Michael B. Jordan, along with NFL stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
Alpine team boss Flavio Briatore confirmed earlier this year that multiple parties had expressed interest in purchasing the minority stake. Briatore also indicated that Horner had been involved in discussions with Otro Capital regarding a potential deal.

Horner has been linked with several Formula 1 opportunities since leaving Red Bull Racing in July last year, ending a two-decade association with the team where he served as team principal and CEO. One of the most discussed possibilities has been a role at Alpine, potentially alongside former Formula 1 commercial chief Bernie Ecclestone.
However, according to a report by The Telegraph, Wolff and Mercedes are also evaluating the option of purchasing the Otro Capital shares. The potential investment could strengthen the existing relationship between the German manufacturer and Alpine, as Mercedes currently supplies hybrid power units to the French team.
A Mercedes spokesperson did not deny the reported interest and emphasised the ongoing strategic partnership between the two organisations.
“Mercedes is a key strategic partner of Alpine and we are being kept apprised of the latest developments,” the spokesperson stated.
From Alpine’s perspective, the team declined to comment on specific individuals or negotiations, stressing that any discussions are handled by shareholders and interested parties rather than the racing operation itself.
“We do not comment on any specific names or individuals. Any discussions are not a matter for the team; they are between the stakeholders and parties expressing an interest,” an Alpine spokesperson said.
“The primary focus is the immediate task at hand, which is the start of the racing season and ensuring a sustained recovery of performance on track.”
If realised, the involvement of Wolff or Horner in Alpine’s ownership structure could represent a significant shift in the political and commercial landscape of Formula 1, particularly as the championship enters a new technical era.
