Toto Wolff couldn't hide his smirk when discussing Ferrari's turmoil at the Italian Grand Prix. The Mercedes boss highlighted his team's approach to managing two drivers as key, while subtly suggesting Ferrari could end up looking like "idiots" if they don't handle similar situations well.
Lewis Hamilton's frustration peaked at Monza after being forced wide onto the gravel by teammate Charles Leclerc at the first chicane on the opening lap. The incident cost him six positions and sparked criticism that Ferrari has no clear rules.
"That's been part of our role in the last 12 years, to manage both sides of the garage well, because if you're in a title fight, one is always going to be disappointed after a race and the other one is going to be happy," Wolff told Sky Sports F1.
Wolff stressed the importance of transparency and no hidden agendas in applying team orders. Mercedes, he said, prefers the term "racing intent" over rigid rules. "Our drivers don't want rules," he added with a smile.
However, he acknowledged that tough calls must be made. At Monza, Mercedes instructed George Russell to yield to Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who had a faster strategy. The decision drew criticism, but Wolff insisted it was the right move.
"It's absolutely the right thing we did," he asserted. "George was on a hard tyre, and the one-stop was predicted to be the better strategy. Kimi had to take the medium because he started on the hard. There was just no way."
Wolff also highlighted the tense moments between his drivers at the end of the race. "We could have quickly looked like idiots, like the Ferraris eventually did. So, it's a fine margin," he said.
With this statement, Wolff seems to send a message that good driver management is the difference between victory and chaos. Ferrari, on the other hand, still needs to find the right formula to cool tensions between Hamilton and Leclerc.
