Toto Wolff's frustration boiled over in the Mercedes garage during Italian GP qualifying at Monza. The team boss was seen striking his timing console after Pierre Gasly snatched pole position from George Russell by a tiny margin.
The moment of anger came at the end of Q3 when Gasly posted a surprising lap time. Wolff's reaction quickly became a hot topic, and Mercedes responded with a humorous post on social media.
Last-Lap Heartbreak and Mercedes' Sweet Dig
Mercedes shared a behind-the-scenes clip with a playful caption: "This goes out to all computer screens, we're sorry - we just really wanted that Pole for George Russell. But congratulations to Alpine."
Wolff admitted his frustration because Russell was the fastest car on track, but luck wasn't on their side in the decisive lap. "It's OK," he said. "I just cared so much for George to be on pole. He was the quickest car out there. And then we got compromised in the last lap, so... yeah, that was annoying."
Despite the disappointment, Wolff praised Alpine. "I'm happy for Alpine. We played a little part in there as a Mercedes customer team, and them being on pole is something different. They've done a good job," he added.
Gasly Can't Be Ruled Out for the Race
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Wolff warned that Gasly is a serious threat for Sunday. "You always need to take everybody seriously," he said. "They have a huge amount of straight-line speed. They've taken away a lot of drag. On a single lap, that proved to be necessary. The race is a completely different ballgame. So we shall see."
Russell will start second on the grid, just behind Gasly. Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri, who originally qualified third, received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Liam Lawson. As a result, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton move up to third and fourth respectively.
