Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has issued a strong and unwavering defence of George Russell following sharp criticism from Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko regarding his recent performances. Although the British driver dominated the season-opening round in Australia, he has endured a torrid campaign, struggling consistently to unlock the performance potential of the W17 challenger alongside team-mate Kimi Antonelli.
Antonelli is now on the absolute cusp of clinching the world championship in only his sophomore F1 season, holding a commanding 123-point advantage over his experienced team-mate with just 125 points remaining heading into the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend. The Italian prodigy requires nothing more than a ninth-place finish to officially become Formula 1's youngest-ever world champion.
As Russell battled ongoing handling limitations and fought to adapt his driving style, Helmut Marko publicly questioned whether the Briton would ever get another shot at world championship glory or secure number-one status at any competitive team in the future. Those remarks prompted an immediate and firm rebuttal from the Mercedes leadership.
Addressing media representatives, Wolff stated that while he respects opposing viewpoints, Marko is fundamentally mistaken about Russell's underlying capabilities. The Austrian executive emphasized that the W17 simply does not suit the driver's natural preferences, compounded by the immense psychological hurdle of facing an unstoppable run of victories from his teenage team-mate early in the year.
Looking ahead, Wolff pledged absolute support from the factory to diagnose the exact technical disconnect affecting Russell's lap times. The team insists it is unacceptable for the driver to be half a second adrift on pace and is fully committed to helping him rediscover his championship-winning form for the upcoming seasons.
