A weekend that was expected to showcase Mercedes and their title ambitions turned into a puzzling ordeal during qualifying at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang. Despite rolling out a massive upgrade package, the Silver Arrows struggled to find their usual competitive edge.
Team Principal Toto Wolff admitted his squad was left completely baffled by the sudden drop in pace. Earlier in the day during FP3, Kimi Antonelli had raised expectations by topping the timesheets with ominous speed.
However, the momentum evaporated when it mattered most. Antonelli could only salvage fourth place, while his teammate slipped further down to eighth on the starting grid. Wolff noted that the team encountered car behaviors never seen throughout the entire season.

"Very difficult to understand," Wolff said, pointing out excessive aerodynamic drag on the straights and a frustrating lack of front-end grip causing severe understeer in the slow corners at Sepang.
The Brackley squad is now diving deep into the telemetry data overnight, convinced that the new parts are fundamentally sound but failing to unlock their potential at this specific venue.
